The Journey to Now and the Journey Ahead
The topic of AI and Public Service is one where I have been advocating action for some time now — both within the U.S. and internationally.
- Back in 2016 (on LinkedIn) — How Can Artificial Intelligence Make Us More Free, Less Distracted, and More Effective?
- As well as in 2016 — How Our Exponentially Changing World is Challenging People and Organizations
- In 2019 with MIT Sloan Management Review and co-author Ray Wang — Three People-Centered Design Principles for Deep Learning
- Later, after witnessing a flood of bot submitted comments to a federal agency, I did my best to get the word out about the issues including work from 2017–2020 with the People-Centered Internet Coalition on Our People-Centered Digital Future and Vital Questions on the Future of Pluralistic Co-Existence
- Plus work to address both Challenges and Needed New Solutions for Open Societies to Maintain Civil Discourse during the same period
- And a detailing of those events in 2017 and 2018 here with the globally respected cybersecurity leader publication OODAloop on Why a Pause on AI Development Is Not the Answer: An Insider’s Perspective
- Later from 2020–2021 as Executive Director with the bipartisan Commission on the Geopolitical Impacts of New Technologies and Data, we put forward actionable recommendations that the U.S., Allies, Friends, and Partners could advance regarding “Enhanced Trust and Confidence in the Digital Economy” in addition to cybersecurty, quantum computing, resilient supply chains, the future of biology, and the future of commercial space
- Then from 2022-present as Distinguished Fellow and Co-Chair for the Loomis Innovation Council at the Stimson Center, we have assembled a coalition of impressive tech and data “vanguards” who care about how trustworthy, responsible AI can help improve public service as well as improve human collaborations to work and shape a better world together
- Lastly, with the National Academy or Public Administration on 04 May of this year (Star Wars day!) we had this lively conversation on Generative AI in public service as part of Standing Panel on Technology Leadership
- And next week I’ll be providing a keynote as part of GMU’s AI Strategies Minerva Grant Team on “Why trust matters in AI? How can we achieve it?” at their Arlington Campus — if you’re in the area you’re welcome to join!
So needless to say, I look forward to working with NAPA on the “Future of Artificial Intelligence and Public Service” to advance new approaches for educating, convening, and engaging the public, policymakers, and government leaders in “co-creating the future.”
